I-520 growth spurt may be cancerous in the long run

Web posted Wednesday, June 11, 2003 Letter to the Editor of the Augusta Chronicle

This is in regard to the June 7 news article, "States expect growth spurt." A "growth spurt" can be cancerous. Be forewarned.

Our future is right in front of our eyes. Just look across the river to the east and south of the greater Augusta area. There we see cancerous industrial plants that produce a cesspool of pollution and putrid air to breathe. Our quality of life in the greater Augusta area has been diminished by this so-called "development." Do we want the extension of this "cancer" on the South Carolina side?

Only two parties are elated about this Interstate 520 extension into South Carolina: real estate agencies, who double their investment, and the industrial polluters, who will have "quick access" to Interstate 20. This so-called development is simply an "extension" of the polluter's driveway.

Certain quotations from this article were very revealing. One real estate agent predicted that this extension "will send waves of commercial development toward Aiken." Translation, the only waves Aiken will see are more toxic fumes and putrid air coming their way.

Near the end of the article, it was stated that "Ultimately, officials envision extending I-520 across I-20 into Edgefield County and eventually Columbia County."

In your dreams. Do you think the people living in Columbia County want to contaminate their fresh air with that found in the south and east of Augusta?

Finally, the top quote of the day from that article: "This is just one more step in advancing the entire region." Then, "One of these days there will be a loop around the Central Savannah River Area."

If that happens, then we better build a few more Medical Colleges of Georgia to care for the sick who will be encircled in a caldron of toxic waste products that will endanger every living thing in the area. Old Chinese proverb: "Be careful what you wish for."
