Let's get tough with TIFs

Ed McMullen did an excellent job of portraying the fallacies of the proposed TIF in Aiken County in his column dated Oct. 5.

What concerns me most is how such a bill came to pass in South Carolina. The ethics of the bill itself need to be examined, thoroughly discussed, with consideration given to the voiding of the bill and amendments.

What were the circumstances that got this bill passed after Gov. Sanford vetoed it the first time around? What was the evolution of the bill and its full discussion before the full body of our state legislature?

Can this be another instance where term limits would have prevented the passage of such a bill? The abuse of power by our elected officials is usually accompanied by those long in office convinced that they know best for the populace. Longevity for an elected official also means they have learned their job well, and know how (too well) to get a bill through the usual maze of government procedures and paperwork.

This is a prime example of the manipulation of our laws at the expense of the taxpayers and accomplished by our elected officials too long in office.

I believe a full investigation of this recent TIF legislation , with full public debate, is in order.
