I agree that we must work very hard to see that the proposed ordinance is enacted! It represents a landmark toehold against those who would ruin our quality of life by overbuilding relative to the infrastructure of our city.
And, I believe that the Type III traffic study should include more than streets within 1 mile. The ordinance would be quite effective if the area in question had a regular matrix of streets. However, South Aiken has been brought to a large bottleneck situation because of the exclusive area of Woodside. This has stopped any semblance of a matrix of through streets. Witness the effect of additional population added to lower Woodside or the other additions west of Whiskey Road, only accessible from the Aiken Mall, or other points on south Highway 19, (SRS, New Ellenton, the growing shopping complexes by Target, Lowes and Walmart) by traveling over Dougherty Road, where that thoroughfare is now only 2 lanes wide and subject to 1/2-mile backups at rush hour. Even though it is not within 1 mile of any possible new developments, it will carry the brunt of the crossover traffic generated by them. As long as this kind of aberration exists, even the Type III study criteria will not be adequate. Win Magerkurth |
